Pruning Principles and Techniques
Understand the different management objectives and reasons for pruning.
Understand the difference between heading cuts and thinning cuts and the location of these cuts on a branch.
Be able to describe the effects of pruning on tree parts including leaves, buds, branches, as well as the impacts on tree physiological functions. Understand the tree's responses to pruning.
Be able to identify the locations of the following tree structures: branch collar, branch bark ridge, callus material, woundwood, node, and internode.
Understand the terms: flush cut, drop-crotch, pollarding, and V-shaped crotch.
Understand and be able to correctly perform the 3-cut pruning method.
Understand the advantages and disadvantages of pruning during each of the following seasons: winter, early spring, spring, early summer, mid-to-late summer, fall.
