URBAN FORESTRY

Reports

Objective: To gain an awareness of the importance of urban forests, tree care and tree problems and opportunities in today’s society.

Procedure:

1) A total of four (4) reports will be prepared throughout the semester at 2-week intervals. General topics for these reports will be assigned and will correspond with the subject matter being covered in class. These reports will be due every other Thursday.

2) The first three (3) reports will be news article reviews. Use the following sources:
bulletCurrent newspaper, local or national
bulletCurrent magazines (Tree Topics, TCI, Urban Forests, Arbor Age, Arborist News, Journal of Arboriculture, and others)
bulletTelevision or radio report
bulletInternet source that is informational or educational

Report #1: An article review on any topic relating to Urban Forestry. Articles must relate to issues dealing with trees, or people using trees in urban setting.

Report #2: An article review on topics relating to tree injuries, causes of injuries, lightning, or other injury or tree damage topic.  Avoid articles relating to tree diseases or insect pests.

Report #3: An article review on tree care activities such as pruning, repairs, planting, climbing, tree care equipment, tools, or other skills.

3) The review must (1) summarize the article IN YOUR OWN WORDS, and (2) explain how the problem or issue (main idea) relates to urban forestry.

4) The review must document the source of the article, author (s), date of publication AND have a COPY OF THE ARTICLE ATTACHED.

5) The last report will involve more research and will require at least three (3) different sources. Generally, news articles or magazines will not be suitable. More specific information will be provided later. The general topics for this report is:

Report #4: Diseases or Insects of urban trees

6) Reports must be typed, double-spaced, a minimum of 2 pages.

7) These reports will account for 20% of the final class grade.
