
Professor Boyer arrived at DSLCC in August, 1999, from Great Falls, Montana, where he was tenured as an Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Criminal Justice Studies Program at the UNIVERSITY OF GREAT FALLS, Montana. He was licensed as a Private Investigator, and served on the PEACE OFFICERS STANDARDS AND TRAINING (POST) COUNCIL and the BOARD OF PRIVATE SECURITY PATROL OFFICERS AND INVESTIGATORS for the STATE OF MONTANA. His other professional experiences include employment as an Adjunct Instructor and Police Training Coordinator at HARRISBURG AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and having served for thirteen years as a Patrol Officer (three years) and Detective (10 years) with the LEBANON BUREAU OF POLICE, Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
Professor Boyer also possesses several current and active law enforcement instructor certifications, including certified Oleoresin Capsicum Aerosol Training (OCAT) [Pepper Spray] Instructor-Trainer and Practical And Tactical Hndcuffing (PATH) Instructor-Trainer from PERSONAL PROTECTION CONSULTANTS, INCORPORATED; certified basic police academy and in-service update instructor and lethal weapons training instructor from the COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA MUNICIPAL POLICE OFFICERS EDUCATION AND TRAINING COMMISSION; certified basic law enforcement academy instructor from the STATE OF MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, PEACE OFFICERS STANDARDS AND TRAINING (POST) COUNCIL; and certified firearms and security instructor from the STATE OF MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, BOARD OF PRIVATE SECURITY PATROL OFFICERS AND INVESTIGATORS. Professor Boyer is also certified as a Certified Law Enforcement Trainer (CLET) by the AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING (ASLET) continuously since February, 2002, the first such designation awarded in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of the first twelve internationally.
Professor Boyer is a Life Member of the VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATORS (VACJE) and serves on the Board of Directors of VACJE during 2003-2005. He served as Immediate Past President of VACJE during 2002-2003; as President of VACJE 2001-2002, and as Vice President and Program Chair of VACJE during 2000-2001. Professor Boyer also holds professional memberships in the NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE HONOR SOCIETY, ALPHA PHI SIGMA, the AMERICAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ASSOCIATION, LAMBDA ALPHA EPSILON, and the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS (AAUP). He is a charter member of the INTERNATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATORS AND TRAINERS ASOCIATION (ILEETA). Professor Boyer was also selected as a 2001 Instructional Leader by the VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM (VCCS).
Professor Boyer is a Life Member and Past Master of EUCLID LODGE #58, ANCIENT FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS, Great Falls, Montana.
Professor Boyer holds a master's degree in Human Organizational Science with a concentration in Criminal Justice Administration from VILLANOVA UNVERSITY, a baccalaureate degree in Sociology from TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, and an associate degree in Law Enforcement Technology from PRINCE GEORGE'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
Professor Boyer is married to the former Gayle Shelby Sanders for 33 years, and has a son, Gary, Jr., aka: "Jay Montana", age 30. Professor Boyer is a Vietnam Era veteran, having served four years in the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Sergeant (E-4).
