CONSTITUTION AND BY  LAWS  

Preamble

The Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College of the Virginia Community College Systems in order to promote Community Involvement, Peer Support, Networking and Community and College Resources, do ordain and establish this constitution for Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.  

ARTICLE I

Name and Purpose

 

1.         This club shall be known as the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club of the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

2.         The purpose of this organization shall be to provide a forum in which students may come together to promote student involvement in the Administration of Justice field, community activities, and to develop the social skills needed to enhance each individuals character.

ARTICLE II

Membership and Voting

 

1.         Active Membership is open to and shall include: all enrolled Dabney S. Lancaster Community College students who remain in good academic standing; and all faculty and staff members.

2.         Active Members include all individuals who have signed the membership roster and who have maintained good academic standing as defined by the college catalog.

3.         The membership may, by majority vote, to the status of Associate Life Membership any person who has made a significant contribution toward the operations and success of the club.   ALM's will receive a plaque in recognition of this status.   (Added October, 2003)

 

ARTICLE III

Power Structure

1.         The voting power of decision making of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club shall be invested in its members.

2.         The Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club shall be empowered to elect by plurality vote of its membership the following officers, listed in order of presidential succession; President, Vice President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary Treasurer, and Sergeant of Arms.

3.         The terms of office for the above members of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club shall be for one calendar year from the date of the election or until the new academic year begins which ever occurs first.

A.        An elected student must maintain a 2.5 average.

B.         Except for the office of President, which is filled by the Vice President, election will be held within two weeks after a vacancy has been declared by an elected officer.

4.         A majority of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club members registered other than officers or the organization's advisors shall constitute a quorum for carrying on business.

5.         The advisor shall not have the power to vote on questions on the floor.

6.         The President or Vice President (in absence of President) shall have the power to break a tied vote.

7.         The Executive Board shall consist of all officers, the committee chairs, and the groups Faculty Advisor.

ARTICLE IV

Power of the Officers of the Administration of Justice Club

1.         Power of the President:

A.        He/she shall have the power to nominate the chairperson and members of all committees with the advice and consent of the members of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club.

B.         He/she shall have the power to vote in case of a tie.

C.        He/she shall call and preside at all meetings of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club.

D.        He/she shall represent the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club at official college functions.

E.         He/she shall handle all matters pertaining to the general welfare of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club not otherwise specifically delegated.

2.         The Vice President shall:

A.        Assume all duties of the President during absence of the president.

B.         Become president if the Office of President is vacated during the one-year session and for the election of the new Vice President at the next regular meeting.

C.        Review reports, budgets, and make recommendations to the Executive Board on all club business.

3.         The Secretary shall:

A.        Keep a permanent record of all of the proceedings of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club organizational meetings. These records are to be available for the information of any member of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club.

B.         Keep the record of attendance of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club meeting.

C.        Publish all proceedings and required notices of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) to Student Senate Body.

D.        Conduct all external correspondence of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club.

4.         The Treasurer shall:

A.        Receive and record such amounts that may be directed.

B.         Report the financial position of the club at all meetings.

C.        Serve as chairperson of the appropriations committee.

5.         The Assistant Secretary-Treasurer shall:

A.        Assist the Secretary and/or the treasurer in the performance of his/her duties.

B.         Serve as the Secretary/or Treasurer in the absence of or vacancy in either officer position.

6.         The Sergeant at Arms shall:

A.        Insure that meeting are conducted in an orderly manner, in conformity to Robert's Rules of Order.

7.         Any officer absent from three consecutive meetings will be automatically dismissed.

8.         Only in extenuating circumstances will this not be in effect, however, you must contact the club advisor to explain. (Circumstances such as, prolonged hospital stay, death in the family, etc.)

                                

ARTICLE V

Power of the Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club

1.         The Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club shall be empowered to obtain resources required for speakers.

2.         The Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club shall approve their constitution and any amendments there of.

3.         The Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club shall approve the annual expenditures.

4.         The Administration of Justice (ADJ) Club is empowered to raise funds after being approved by Student Senate and the director of Student Services.
