Information for  EluminateLive! Students for Spring, 2009

For HIS 112, PLS 136, & SOC 268 this spring, you have the choice of attending class in person by showing up in Room 649 at the class time or participating via Elluminate from any internet connected computer.  You may also switch back and forth between the two options.  In order to attend by Elluminate, just follow the instructions below.  The college has upgraded to Elluminate 8.3 this summer, so even if you used Elluminate in the past, you'll need to go through the download process listed below.  If you have any trouble, just email me or call my cell 540-691-7763

Elluminate is web-conferencing software which allows users with an internet connection (a dial-up modem works fine) to have real time meetings and classes.  The software allows each participant to hear and talk to the others and to view and use a white board.  There is also a chat room and several other features to enhance the virtual classroom experience.  Combined with BlackBoard (classroom management software), we will be able to meet as a class, but be in different locations.  You’ll need speakers at a minimum to hear the class, but it is a good idea to also acquire headphones with a microphone built in.   With earphones you won’t disturb others near you during class and with the microphone attached, the sound remains clear when you turn to type or read something while talking.  You can find suitable earphones from under $20.  The Dabney Book Store sells a set for about $15.

Elluminate needs to load some java software on a computer before it can be used on that computer.  Once it has loaded the first time, then Elluminate recognizes its presence and takes you directly into the classroom.  If you switch to another computer, you’ll need to download the software on that computer.  Downloading the software can take anywhere from about two minutes (on a computer with a fast LAN connection such as at the college) to over an hour for an older computer with a dial-up modem.  You’ll want to download the software onto the computer you’ll be using before the first class session--it is already loaded on all of the college computers.  Once the software is on your computer, it will only take about one minute to login to an Elluminate session.

Downloading the software is simple and you can do it anytime —here are the instructions:

  1. Go to my homepage on the web.  the link is:  http://faculty.dslcc.edu/jbarnes/default.htm
  2. In the left hand column, click on the link:  John’s Elluminate Classroom
  3. A dialogue box opens and you just need to type your actual full name (no special login name or password is needed) and click login.  If nothing happens, your web browser is probably blocking downloads as a security measure.  In internet Explorer, you'll see a line right under the top menu bar saying that it blocked a download.  Just click on this line and a dropdown menu bar appears with "Download" as one of your options.  Click this and the download will begin.
  4. Another dialogue box opens and you should select “Open” from your choices.
  5. Elluminate will realize that its software is not present if it hasn’t been used before on this computer and ask permission to download it.  Always choose “Open” rather than “Save” when you have an option.
  6. Depending on your firewall and security settings, you may get some other dialogue boxes asking for permission to download.  Especially if you have a slow connection, stay near your computer and check frequently.  You may think the download is proceeding, but, instead, your computer is waiting for you to give  permission.
  7. Once the software is downloaded, you’ll be asked to agree to a license notice and will have to answer a couple other questions about internet connection type and then will be taken to an empty Elluminate Classroom.  If you happen to pop into the classroom while I'm conducting a class--no problem.  You won't disturb us.  Just exit once you are in and you'll have the software loaded and ready to go.
  8. When you get to the classroom, all is well.  You can check it out, but won’t be able to do much without me being in the room.
  9. Now that your computer has the software, all you do to login for your first class session is go back to my home page and click on the John’s Elluminate Classroom link,  type in your name and you’ll be in the classroom in about a minute.
