SPD 250 THE ART OF THE FILM
Course Description
SPD 250 THE ART OF THE FILM [3cr.] explores
various aspects of film. It may treat of a particular performer or director who
has contributed significantly to film art, or it may deal with a specific type
or genre of film art.
During the summer of 2007 it will examine the films of Alfred Hitchcock.
instructional goals
The course will treat motion
pictures as a major and uniquely expressive contemporary art form. it should
provide students with a knowledge of film techniques and film language that will
enhance the viewing of films.
The course may also examine, compare, and evaluate different versions of the
same film, plot, or theme.
course objectives
To understand methods of
criticizing film as an art form.
To increase an awareness of the human condition through exposure to a variety of
attitudes toward life.
To increase students' familiarity with foreign cultures through the medium of
the cinema.
To develop the ability to partake in meaningful class discussions.
To improve writing ability by means of written critiques.

grading
The grade will be based on two tests
given throughout the summer, and also on class participation in the
class discussions. Anyone wishing to improve a grade on the test or simply
protect themselves for a poor grade on any of the tests may write a paper on a
film not studied in class.
attendance
As part of the grade will come from
class discussions, attendance is mandatory.
Students are responsible for all of the films and reading required for this
course.
