COURSE DESCRIPTION
SPD 110 Introduction to Speech Communication [3cr.] examines the elements affecting speech communication at the individual, small group, and public communication levels with emphasis on the practice of communication.
Prerequisite: ENG 01 & 04, or sufficient test score.
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Course OutcomeUpon completion of this course, the student will be acquainted with the fundamental principles of speech communication on individual, small group, and large audience levels; will have developed confidence in speaking in a variety of situations with a variety of speech types; and will have a basis for evaluating the communication skills of others.
Unit Objectives
1. The student must attend all classes.
2. The student must complete all assignments in order to pass the course.
3. The student should keep a journal recording reactions to the sessions.
4. The student will prepare and deliver such speeches as are determined.
5. At the conclusion of the course, the student will submit a typed copy of a speech he or she considers the best.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
Instruction will include lectures, readings, research, outlining, taping and viewing the tapes of speeches, classroom discussions, and individual coaching.
INSTRUCTOR’S POLICIES
All work and speeches are expected on the dates they are due. An assignment that is not given on time will lose one letter grade for each class meeting it is not presented.
All speeches must be given in order to pass the course.
All pre-assigned work should be typed.
A minimum attendance rate of 80% is mandatory/
One point will be subtracted from the final grade for each un-excused absence.
OFFICE HOURS
Office hours are as posted or by appointment. If I am not in the office
during the scheduled office hours, I will leave a note stating where I may be
found. Should the scheduled hours be inconvenient, appointments can be arranged.
Rockbridge students taking the course on compressed video should communicate via
email.
GRADING
On speeches, tests, examinations, homework, and class assignments the following letter grades correspond to the following numerical grades.
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 0-59
Letter grades will be used on all speeches and assignments.
It should be understood that the only person with whom you are competing is yourself.
It is on your own individual progress and improvement that you will be evaluated.
