BUS 122: Business Mathematics II

Course Description

Applies mathematical operations to business processes and problems.  Reviews basic statistics, distribution of profit and loss in partnerships, distribution of corporate dividends, simple interest, present value, bank discount notes, multiple payment plans, compound interest, annuities, sinking funds and amortization.

Course Content/Instructional Goals

Upon completion of Business Mathematics II, the student will have the knowledge and skills to understand and calculate various mathematical business procedures such as depreciation, promissory notes, credit interest, mortgage payments, taxes, insurance premiums, financial reports, stock dividends and bond yields.

The following objectives will be completed for Business Mathematics II:

1.      Identify parts of a promissory note; calculate bank discounts, true rate of interest, and proceeds.

2.      Calculate compound interest and compute effective rate and present value.

3.      Calculate a simple discount note and discount an interest bearing note before maturity.

4.      Utilize compound interest and present-value tables.

5.      Determine the amount of annuities: ordinary and annuity due; determine sinking funds.

6.      Understand installment buying, Rule of 78, and revolving charge credit charges.

7.       Calculate the cost of home ownership.

8.      Read, analyze, and interpret financial reports.

9.      Calculate depreciation.

10. Calculate inventory and overhead costs.

11. Determine profits and losses of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

Instructional Procedures

Course material will be presented by lectures, questions and class discussions, and appropriate articles.

Course Materials

Practical Business Math Procedures, 7th ED., by Jeffrey Slater, Irwin McGraw Hill, 2003

Students will need a calculator.

Course Requirements

Punctual and regular class attendance is required. Students should read required readings prior to class and be prepared to participate in class discussions, including discussion of problems. The final grade will be based upon attendance, participation, homework and exams.

There will be a total of 500 points broken down as follows:

5 Exams of 60 points each       300

The exams will be given at the end of each of the units. Makeup exams will only be given if prior arrangements are made. Grades will be determined based upon the total points earned. The following scale will be utilized in computing grades:

A= 90% - 100%

B= 80% - 89.9%

C= 70% - 79.9%

D= 60% - 69.9%

F= 0% - 59.9%

 

Academic Conduct

Academic conduct will be in accordance with and governed by the college policy enumerated in the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Catalog.

Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any student found cheating on examinations, or submitting the work of others will at a minimum receive a zero on the work in question.

Last day to add/drop or receive refund: January 24

Last day to withdraw without academic penalty:  March 21

Class Attendance and Administrative Withdrawal

As stated previously, punctual and regular attendance is required. Any student who misses more than 6 classes will be subject to administrative withdrawal. The instructor will initiate administrative withdrawal for any student not attending classes on a regular basis, and unexcused absences over an extended period of time constitute sufficient reason for removal from class (see DSLCC catalog)

Repeating a Course

Normally, a student is limited to two (2) enrollments in the same credit course. A student desiring to take a course more than twice should formally request permission through a counselor in Student Services. This request will be forwarded to the Dean of Instruction and Student Services (see DSLCC catalog).
