Comparison/Contrast Notes

Creating a comparison/contrast essay means much more than just setting two things (objects, ideas, persons) opposite one another and describing their similarities and differences.

As with any essay, purpose defines focus.  So as we look at the qualities of a comparison/contrast, we need to also examine the reason for viewing the subjects. In general terms, a C/C seeks, as your text states, "to clarify and explain" (373).  More specifically, a C/C highlights elements for the reader that will shed a clearer light on the chosen topics.

This rhetorical style opens a wide range of possibilities.  In this class, you'll be selecting a personal focus for your writing assignment, but this style will also spill over into other courses as you write to examine ideas, time periods, cultures, philosophies, and controversies.

For this English 111 assignment, I'd like for you to select something you can give close examination.  You may choose something as tangible as two different vehicles or as ethereal as two moments.  You might compare your childhood home with that of your adult abode--or look at the contrast/similarities between yourself and a sibling.

Object--idea--person--you choose.  But your focus is to provide a central look at the relationship between the two.

Once you have your subjects, do some "pre-writing" to identify specifics on each, and then decide which organizational method will be best for what you're considering.  Will your writing/examination be better served with a subject-by-subject look, or would point-by-point give a clearer scope?  Your decision will depend on what element you most want to emphasize.

Again, don't even start that rough draft without a working thesis statement/idea.  For this essay to be successful, you have to have a clear path--and that's not possible without having formed a working knowledge of your focus.

Remember "Grammy Rewards"--not only did Dalfonso create a clear image of both grandmothers, but her C/C revealed the influence these two unique women brought to their granddaughter's life.
