A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read.

Week 1

Readings and Vocabulary:

Welcome to class and our Spring 2012 semester!  This week we have much to do to get started, and the first part of that effort comes in your becoming familiar with your course text.  Spend some time this week perusing your textbook and seeing how it is organized.  Each chapter has great directions and sections for you to work with as you improve your reading comprehension and vocabulary.  Key in your success in this class is NOT skipping ANY sections.  Take the time to work through each assigned chapter--if you don't, you risk being successful.

We begin at the beginning, so we will be working with Chpt. 1 this week and through the middle of next week.  On Wednesday of next week, you will have a Response Quiz on this first chapter.

Through this semester, you will be learning several reading strategies and finding tools that will help you in your college work not just in this course but in others you may be taking now and will take in the future.  Make these strategies and tools part of your everyday response to reading so that they become second nature for you.  In so doing, you will have another path that ensures your success!

Cram and Jam Effective Reading.
Read smart--read with strategy--use the tools!

Project Information:

We will be working on a class project that will help you develop stronger comprehension skills as you explore information that is important to you and your career choices.  In Week 3, we will start this project and it will carry through the semester.  You will need a binder--at least 1" in size--to keep both this work and class work, which will form your class portfolio for this course.

** Pace yourself! Give yourself time to think and respond to your readings in this class and in your other courses. Stay focused and ask yourself those two important questions: What am I reading? Why am I reading it? Give your brain time to focus.

Steady on is the key to success--go for it!!
